Google has always made it a point that content over the Internet should largely by free. But recently, it announced that it's going to launch a new service for online publishers next year which would allow them to earn more revenue by providing content for a price. Thus, aside from content that's readily viewable for free, publishers can now get paid online for content that's exclusive for paying visitors.

According to Google, this new paid-content service is another way that publishers can earn through their websites on top of the traffic that's already provided by the company. "'Open' need not mean free," says Google and adds that "premium need not be hidden."

The service, which may include a stored-value system, will be made available using Google Checkout and will implement micropayments similar to how AdSense users are paid but does not expect this to exceed revenues from advertising. It will be compatible for use with other non-Google properties. It will also allow users to search for relevant content that's not necessarily free to view.

The move was spurred by a challenging proposal of the Newspaper Association of America (NAA) that companies find ways for publishers to get paid for content online.
